BSSS 2019 Annual Conference ‘Managing Soil Resources to Secure Our Future’

septembre 4 - septembre 5
University of Sheffield, Western Bank, Sheffield S1 + Google Map

The multi-functionality of soils puts ever greater pressure on how and what expert advice is provided to manage our soils and the time that remains until we must reduce Greenhouse gas emission gets ever shorter. Brexit and the 25-year plan will determine the direction of financial support for agriculture and the use of soils for production. However, will the area of highly productive soils be further jeopardised by the housing crisis? Will the next generation molecular techniques provide the tools for managing the soil’s biological component? How can land managers be supported in enhancing their skills and understanding of soils to…

WETSCAPES Conference – Understanding the ecology of restored fen peatlands for protection and sustainable use

septembre 10 - septembre 13
University of Rostock, Ulmenstr. 69 University of Rostock
Rostock, 18057 Allemagne
+ Google Map

Peatlands cover only 3 % of the land surface worldwide but with some 450 gigatonnes of carbon they contain substantially more than the carbon stock in the entire forest biomass of the world. Thus, peatlands are the most effective terrestrial carbon stock on our globe. Globally, wetlands are strongly impacted by humans. Many peatlands have been artificially drained for agricultural and forestry purposes, or peat extraction. In Europe, for instance, half of the total peatland area has been artificially drained. Drainage leads to decomposition and compaction of the peat soil, and, thus, to subsidence. Degradation of peat may continue for…
