The Soil and Crop Sciences Section in the School of Integrative Plant Science seeks applicants for a 9-month, tenure-track position focusing on digital technologies in agronomy. This position is part of an interdisciplinary cluster hire in Digital Agriculture in support of the new Cornell Initiative for Digital Agriculture.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position has 50% research and 50% extension responsibilities in the application of digital agriculture in field crop production systems. The incumbent is expected to connect laboratory, field and data-analytical activities that translate research into management systems that work effectively to address on-farm decisions and enhance returns from technology investments. Research may focus on the development and application of advanced technologies, analytics and tools for field-level decision-making, precise application of inputs that match crop and pest-control needs, and/or optimized, real-time agronomic management. The individual will synthesize laboratory, field and data-analytical activities to translate research into tools that expedite and optimize management decisions for farmers and enhance returns on technological investments. The extension program should focus on education in the application of precision and digital agriculture tools to enable field crop farmers and service providers to enhance cropping system sustainability.
The successful applicant will play a critical role in advancing New York State agriculture into the digital era by developing and leading internationally-recognized research and extension programs supported by external funding. Opportunities for collaboration exist in CALS, the College of Engineering, the Faculty of Computing and Information Science and the SC Johnson College of Business, whose faculty lead discoveries in computational decision tools, rapid phenotyping, remote and in-field sensing and systems engineering.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Ph.D. in agronomy, crop science, soil science, agricultural/biological engineering, or related disciplines. The candidate must have good skills in computational technology and data analytics, and be familiar with field crop production systems. We seek applicants whose record in research, teaching or service has prepared them to contribute to Cornell's historical commitment to diversity. Well-qualified applicants are expected to have a distinguished record with academic accomplishments, experience with obtaining extramural grant funding, and strong teaching skills, preferably with stakeholder audiences.
